Operations and Human Resource Manager

Minority Africa is looking for an Operations and Human Resource Manager to be the steady centre of a growing, distributed organisation. If you are organised, trusted, and genuinely good with both people and systems, and you like being the person who makes an organisation run, we would love to hear from you.

As our Operations and Human Resource Manager, you will hold our operations, human resources, and day-to-day finance together. You will keep our people supported and our processes clear, run hiring and onboarding, track budgets and payments, and give the co-founders a reliable picture of how the organisation is doing. You will sit at the centre of the structure as a neutral integrator across all of our teams, and you will help us measure and report on our work through a monitoring and evaluation dashboard and quarterly reviews.

This is a full-time, remote position on a two-year renewable contract, open to candidates based anywhere in Africa or the diaspora.

Key Responsibilities

Operations

  • Keep our processes, tools, and documentation clear and running smoothly across the organisation.
  • Coordinate across teams so work moves and nothing falls through the cracks.
  • Own our operational calendar, meetings rhythm, and record-keeping.

People and human resources

  • Run hiring, onboarding, and offboarding, and keep contracts and records in order.
  • Support team members, managers, and the co-founders on day-to-day HR matters.
  • Help build a healthy, fair, and well-documented working culture in a remote team.

Finance and reporting

  • Track budgets, process payments, and keep clean financial records with our accountant.
  • Maintain a monitoring and evaluation (M&E) dashboard of the organisation’s key metrics.
  • Prepare and run quarterly reviews so the co-founders and teams can see how we are doing.

What should you have?

  • Experience in operations, human resources, finance, or accounting — or a blend of these.
  • Strong organisation and the ability to hold many moving parts without losing the thread.
  • Discretion, fairness, and good judgement with people and sensitive information.
  • Comfort with budgets, numbers, and simple financial record-keeping.
  • Familiarity with the tools of remote work, and a willingness to set up and improve systems.
  • Clear written and spoken English, and the trust to work independently.

Remuneration

The Operation and Human Resource Manager role pays US$8,400 per year (US$700 per month). This salary is fixed for the full two-year contract; it is reviewed at the end of the two years rather than during it. The role comes with the leaves and benefits set out in our employment contract.

Who we are

We work with a distributed team and a network of freelancers across Nigeria, Uganda, Mauritius, Botswana, and South Africa. Alongside our journalism, we run training and a growing body of work that supports independent storytellers on the continent. You can read more on our About page.

Application

To apply, please submit your application through our application form here. Applications close on 8 November 2026 at 23:00 UTC. We review applications on a rolling basis and encourage you to apply early. The successful candidate is expected to start in January 2027.

Our hiring for the Operation and Human Resource Manager role runs in four stages:

  1. Written application. Your CV, and your answers to the application questions about your operations, HR, and finance experience.
  2. Shortlisting and a short task. Shortlisted candidates complete a short assignment that reflects the real work of the role.
  3. Interview. A conversation with the hiring team about your experience, the task, and how you work.
  4. References and offer. We speak with your referees, confirm details, and make an offer.

We are an equal-opportunity employer and we especially encourage people from minority and underrepresented communities to apply. If you need any accommodation at any point in the process, let us know in your application or by replying to the email you receive from us, and we will work with you.
